When a mystery writer’s friend, Fiona Hastings, is found dead beneath her balcony, the police initially suspect suicide. Certain her friend would not have taken her own life, Eleanor Gentry, arrives at the crime scene, determined to enlist the help Detective Pierce Hirsh and to rescue the dead woman’s cat, Mr. Snuffles.
Having solved cases with Eleanor’s assistance before, Pierce appreciates her insight and attention to detail. After the pair find a clue hidden in Mr. Snuffle’s collar, they set off on a scavenger hunt, travelling to a nearby island to uncover additional clues. Meanwhile, Pierce’s partner, who is not so keen on Eleanor’s amateur efforts, continues the investigation on the mainland.
As Pierce and Eleanor dig into Fiona’s past, Eleanor realizes there was a lot about her friend she didn’t know, including a dead husband, a distant cousin, and a dazzling diamond that just might have been the motive for murder.
